The Attorney-General of the Israelite Government to-day officially filed charges against Mr. William Sylvester and Mr. George Hawkins, formerly of the Jerusalem Electric and Public Service Corporation. Four of the six charges are made against them jointly under the “Official Secrets Act,” and refer to conspiracy to obtain and publish information on the movements of the Israelite defence army liable to be useful to the enemy, and collecting information liable to be useful to enemies of Israel.
Mr. Sylvester is charged also with conspiracy to commit a felony—namely, to place an explosive in Ben Yehuda Street, Jerusalem, on February 22, 1948, with the intention of causing death and injury to persons and damage to property. Another charge is unlawful possession of a radio transmitter.
Mr. Richard Levy, K.C., of London, is expected in Jerusalem next week to assist Mr. Jacob Salamon, of Haifa, who is defending both the accused.
